Horoscope is a system of prediction of the future based on the position of the stars and the signs of the Zodiac at a given time, and on the belief of how this influences the lives of people.

The word, as such, comes from the Latin horoscŏpus, and is in turn from the Greek ὡροσκόπος (horoskópos), which means ‘that observes the time’.

As such, it is a very popular divinatory procedure, according to which, each person belongs to a Zodiac sign, which would come to determine certain characteristics of each person’s personality. As such, there are twelve zodiac signs, related to the elements of the earth, air, water and fire. The signs are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

On the other hand, as a horoscope, the graphic representing the Zodiac is also designated , which is what astrologers are based on to make their predictions. As such, it is a graphic representation of planetary positions at a given time. For its elaboration, astrologers use mathematical and astronomical calculations.

Popularly, the writing in which these types of predictions are also known is the horoscope . Generally, it appears in periodicals, such as newspapers and magazines, as well as on the internet.

Many ancient cultures, such as China or Maya, used horoscopes based on their calendars to establish systems for predicting facts related to the stars.

However, there is no evidence of the scientific validity of the horoscope, which is why it is considered by the skeptics as a superstition, rather related to esotericism.

Chinese horoscope

The Chinese horoscope is one that is based on the Chinese calendar and its twelve annual cycles of animals, known as the Chinese Zodiac. As such, it is a traditional system of prediction of the future that, from the date of birth, attributes to a person a zodiac sign that, according to this system, would come to determine his character and other aspects of his life. In this horoscope, each year corresponds to a sign; these are: the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Pig.
