History of East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana
East Feliciana Parish, located in the southeastern corner of Louisiana bordering Mississippi and West Feliciana Parish, has a long and rich history. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans including the Tunica and Chitimacha tribes. In 1682, French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle claimed the area for France and named it Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV. In 1763, the land was ceded to Great Britain after France lost the French and Indian War.
In 1779, General George Rogers Clark captured Baton Rouge from the British and Spain took over control of Louisiana in 1783. During this time, East Feliciana Parish was part of West Florida which had been ceded to Spain by Great Britain at the end of the American Revolution. In 1810, settlers from Georgia began moving into East Feliciana Parish which became part of Pointe Coupee County at that time.
In 1824, East Feliciana Parish was officially established as an independent parish with its county seat located in Clinton. The first courthouse was built there in 1825 and a jail shortly thereafter. By 1830, East Feliciana had grown to become one of Louisiana’s largest parishes with a population of 11,000 people; most were planters who owned large plantations along with their slaves who worked them.
During the Civil War years (1861-1865), East Feliciana Parish saw much conflict as Union troops occupied Clinton several times and Confederate forces were based nearby at Port Hudson for much of 1863-64 until they surrendered to Union forces in July 1863. After the war ended Reconstruction began but did not last long as white supremacists took control again by 1876 under what is known as “The Redemption”. This period saw increased violence towards African Americans including lynchings along with restrictions on voting rights that lasted until 1965 when civil rights legislation finally began to be enforced across the US South.
Today, East Feliciana Parish is a thriving community with a population of just over 20,000 people according to 2019 census figures; many are descendants of those original settlers from Georgia who made their way down south some 200 years ago. The parish is now home to several small towns such as Jackson and Wilson along with its county seat Clinton where many historic sites can still be found today including Tara Plantation which dates back to the 1820s when it served as an antebellum cotton plantation; visitors can explore this site today on guided tours offered by local historians.
