Founded in 1921, it is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the state. The college offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs across four schools: arts and sciences, business and accounting, education, and health sciences.

The college campus covers 140 acres of mountainous terrain and overlooks the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. It features a variety of academic buildings, residence halls, athletic facilities, a student center, library, art galleries and museums. The campus also boasts several outdoor recreational opportunities including skiing at nearby Wolf Creek Ski Area.
